The only reason this video existes is because of this game a few others. Great game and BLStillM

(+3)

Me and my sister (both artists) have been having a blast with this game!

(+9)

i really wanted to enjoy this game but the controls were so painfully bad and difficult that i couldn't even continue playing after about 20 minutes. i loved how weird and colorful the environment was but my god man, i literally could not handle the controls and how bad they were.

(+1)

Same. Moving forward was fine. Turning made me spin out of control. Was having fun with the drawing assignments. Oh well.

(+8)

really enjoy playing this! just started an hour ago this is a really fun game :) i like the assignments. heres an angel i made with it

Got this in a bundle and I'm glad I didn't buy it for full price, you'll get more enjoyment watching the trailer.

Some feedback after trying this out for the first time today.  Generally I was surprised and enjoyed this game so far.  It's a great idea, and I was a big fan of the crazy campus design!  I love how our colors and tools are so strange that we can't help but make "terrible" abstract drawings.  The limitation actually makes me want to keep trying to draw more things, which is really great!  Also the main character is so perfect. :)

1. I wish there was an "offset to the left/right" camera.  So that when your drawing was open to one side of the screen, the character could be about a third off to the left to make room for the drawing interface.  Walking was extremely uncomfortable as is "out of the box" since I could only ever see in one direction from the character at a time.  This might be fixed if there was a key to hide the drawing pad like a "put away" feature.

2. Some indicator of where the brushes/colors are, or maybe some hints around the level.  I had no idea where to go after getting about half of them, and for a good long while I had no idea the colors could even be collected because they look like sculptures at first.  I kind of dread the moment when I collect almost all of them except 1 or 2.  Maybe they could emit a sound, animate, or glow when in a certain range to let us know that they are pickups?

3. The jumping was funny and fit with the whole wacky thing, but I would love an option to "float when held automatically" or even "hold space to stay at this height".  I play a lot of video games, so tapping to fly isn't too bad for me personally.  But I can see a lot of disabled players being unable to get around the campus due to the required rapid button press in an otherwise rather tame game.  Another solution may be to simply setup walking paths between the islands, so the jumping can become a "cheat", but there is also a way to "walk" to each location.  (At least the ones with brushes/loot on them.)

4. I love the colors and crazy things going on.  But the AI is very flashy and probably not good to stare at in a dark room at night.  I found myself needing to focus on the art or grade windows instead of the AI when he was grading my work.  So I think having an option to slow down or mute the flashing colors would help make the game less eye straining.

5. Some tutorial on the default controls is a must.  I didn't know about x to change camera angles till I came to this page and read about it in the comments.

6. Thanks for saving the drawings to our PCs!  I'm terrible, but it's still nice and encouraging to know if I manage a masterpiece, it will be sitting in a folder for me to share or enjoy later on. :)

this horse (?) got an F. I'm livid.

I love this game a lot, though, and will finish it.Every cut scene brings me closer to godliness

(+5)

I wish the saved art portfolio had the titles of the prompts, though. Only criticism.

(+6)(-3)

Is Jack Stauber making games now? lol

the assignments made me think and were the right mix of freedom and restriction. nice game!

(+12)

Is there an option to disable the flashing dots? I really enjoyed the game but sadly I couldn't finish it. Some parts (the beginning song and every time mr. professor was on screen) made my head hurt

(1 edit) (+1)

as someone with chronic visual migraines I literally could not continue playing because of the flashing dots. I tried covering up the professor every time he was on screen but it just wasn't worth having to do it so much.
EDIT: Apparently what I actually have is retinitis pigmentosa lol, but yeah, strongly do not recommend if flashing and bright colors bother you.

(+2)

Yes please! I had brain surgery on Monday and cannot handle the professor either

(+2)

Noticed it has a word filter, will instagrade you an F depending on some key words. Lol.

Woah? Really?

(+1)

What a wonderful and weird game! It's really fantastic to know that you have been making improvements (ie changing the sky). I also like that you can smash the space bar to basically fly through the air!

(+2)

I have a mac, and for whatever reason it wont open on my computer. Has any one else ran into this problem and got it to work?

if you are using the itch desktop client, try downloading it direct from the itch website :)

mine still isn't opening. downloading it from the itch website directly also :- (

Move the file to another folder, for example the desktop. That should hopefully fix it.

havin the same problem on mac but moving it elsewhere doesn't seem to help any :(

Same issue here :(

i got it case insane itch bundle

same, was it the

Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality

yea( says a year later xD)

(+2)

This was cute and fun to play

I thought it was hilarious to have infinite jumping ability. Finding the tools and color was a nice way to drive the player to explore the areas. I do wish the art board had a lock function to prevent from drawing out of it when needed. Your game in the video is the first one. Also, I failed art sqool.
(+2)

Loved it :) Here is some of my fabulous art
Is the order of the assignments random ?

Great game that I would not have tried had it not been for the massive itch bundle (because 12 dollars is priceeeeyyy)

(+2)

i'm not sure if it's my computer (mac) or the game, but the camera angles are really janky when i walk? i couldn't play for that long because it was giving me motion sickness.

i really like the game and the world though, to the point i was nearly willing to deal with the sickness to find more colours.

(+1)

You can cycle through a few different camera views by pressing X. If you haven't tried that, maybe one of those would be better for you?

(+3)

I left an earlier comment saying the sky gave me a headache - I've now tried the game now that the developer has changed the sky from purple static to something more calm (gradient sky with particles).

I really want to say thanks for this change: turns out this is a really relaxing game. It's gone from being a hypothetical like to something I really enjoy playing.

Though, the teacher gave me an F and I had to redo an assignment :(

Thanks for making the update! :D

Note to the Dev on a possible fix for mac Upvote so dev can see

Mac users seem to be getting an issue when launching the app where a file is improperly marked as a text file instead of an executable. This issue in particular is one I have seen only some people have a problem with.  I downloaded several games from Itch io that didn't have this issue which made me suspect there was a workaround. I spent some  time researching and it seems this is actually an issue with .zip compression. Im not a developer so I cant help too much but here is what I found. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/107903/how-to-create-a-zip-file-in-the-same-format-as-the-finders-compress-menu-item

the other solution I heard is to use .TAR instead of .ZIP https://github.com/golang/go/issues/24057

the comments on this thread are quite informative

It seems that macs default zip compression does not properly store metadata so you need to use the [ditto] command

I also found this from itch.io although you probably already read it https://itch.io/docs/itch/integrating/compatibility-policy.html

I hope that helped some :)

woa thanks for looking into it!

One of the other devs I contacted added a .app.tar download and after testing it I can confirm switching to .TAR compression for mac does fix the issue in at least one case. I also found this as a probable way to fix the zip version If you dont have a Mac. (if you have a mac then instead of using the zip command you need to use the ditto command iirc) https://stackoverflow.com/questions/434641/how-do-i-set-permissions-attributes-on-a-file-in-a-zip-file-using-pythons-zip

I encountered this issue as well. The way I fixed it was by ctrl-clicking, selecting "Open with" and then unzipping the file with The Unarchiver instead of Mac's default Archive Utility. The latter breaks a lot of indie Mac games. If you don't have The Unarchiver downloaded, you can get it on the Mac app store here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-unarchiver/id425424353?mt=12

Sometimes you'll encounter a different error saying "App is damaged and can't be opened." In that case, go into Terminal and type "xattr -cr /Applications/Default.app" (minus the quotation marks, and replace "Default" with the name of the application. Also, before you do this make sure you have the game in your Applications folder obviously) Here's more info: https://osxdaily.com/2019/02/13/fix-app-damaged-cant-be-opened-trash-error-mac/

Edit: if you do both of these things and you're still encountering an error, follow the instructions for using the chmod +x command posted further down by user maxybaer123 (the person I'm replying to)

(+1)(-2)
Now this is what i call a manipulation. Fuck this "AI", man.
(+9)

This game is a joy to replay and may become a regular 'warmup game' on my long art stream days~

(+3)

For everyone wanting mac here is a relatively simple fix

credit to @jeremychu for this as this is just a streamlined version of what he says to do without so much terminal use

Note: The chmod +x command modifies the file and tells your mac that it is supposed to be executed like an app instead of read like a text file. The file we are modifying is the one the app uses to launch but the dev forgot to mark the file as executable so thats all we are doing here.

step 1: find the app in finder

Step 2: Right click or ctrl click on app and click show package contents

step 3: the last step should bring up a folder labeled "Contents" within that open the "MacOS" folder you should see a file labeled something like Art School 2k19.

Step 4 open terminal and type "chmod +x "(note the space after x) drag the file we just found into the terminal window and then hit enter it should look something like this [chmod +x stuff/stuff/stuff/stuff/Art School 2k19]

Step 5 Its fixed navigate back to where you started on step 1 open the file like a normal itch io game and enjoy

If you dont know how to open it or its not working after this the next steps are for you otherwise your done.

Step 6 right click on app and click open it will give you a popup that this is downloaded from the internet hit "ok"

Step 7 right click again and click open it will give you another popup. click "open" on the popup.

thank u !!

(+1)

Thank you! very easy steps and working great with Catalina 10.15.5

(+1)

thank you!

so confusion : ( I cannot open it . I have Mac & downloaded version for Mac. says no available app can open it ?

Downloading it from itch on desktop doesn't work. You have to download it from the internet.

(+4)

I´M GRADUATED GUYS, YEAH!

(+1)

It gives me headache but i still play it. And why is the camera so off?

(+1)

I thought that at first but you can change the camera angle by pressing X.

Agreed here. It has potential but imo it's really not worth the price. It feels more like a demo.

i absolutely love this game a lot, however I cannot use my drawing pen with this, nonetheless this is really really good

i made the button on my tablet pen be a left click and holding that while i draw seems to fix it, idk if it'd work for you. i use huion inspiroy.

if you're on windows and using a wacom tablet, uncheck 'use windows ink'

haha cute! I’d love to use this in an educational setting (for a class). any plans for an online version?

(+4)

On Mac OS Catalina do not work :c Can you fix it? pleaseee!

can you fix the pc download so it works? when i downloaded it, i cant play because the pc download isn't marked as windows.

(+1)

i think i fixed it, can you try again and let me know?

It's fixed for me. Thank u!

The PC version isn't marked as such, which  breaks compatibility with the itch.io desktop app. A fix would be greatly appreciated! :)

(+1)

i think i fixed it, can you try again and let me know?

Yes, it is fixed!

(+1)

The game doesn't seem to be downloadable from the itch app (on Windows)...

(1 edit) (+2)

Mac dialog showing the app cant be opened

:(

i'm also getting this error

i think i fixed it, can you try again and let me know?

The latest upload still doesn't work on Catalina.  Seems like the executable doesn't have the executable bit set.

I got it to work by doing this (bit involved):

Open up terminal

1) Got to the folder where you downloaded the game and enter the Contents/MacOS folder, for example:

cd "/Applications/itch.io/Art Sqool mac.app/Contents/MacOS"

Your folder might be different than "/Applications/itch.io/"

2) Set the executable bit then try to open it by running these commands:

chmod +x "Art School 2k19"

open "Art School 2k19"

MacOS will complain that it can't be opened. Click OK.  Don't close the terminal window yet.

4) Go back to Finder and find the game.  Right click or Ctrl-click on the 'Art Sqool mac'icon.  Select Open in the popup menu.

MacOS will complain again.

5) Go back to the terminal window and try to open again.

open "Art School 2k19"

6) Go back to Finder and open like in step 4.

This time select Open when the popup window appears.

7) Attend Art Sqool! :)

!!! Thank you so mucht this worked :)

I've never used my terminal before so it took me a sec to figure it out but it worked!! Thank you for this!!

(+1)

Thank you for the help!

I somewhat simplified your instructions only the chmod +x line of terminal is needed.

For everyone wanting mac here is a relatively simple fix

credit to @jeremychu for this as this is just a streamlined version of what he says to do without so much terminal use

mac catalina cant run 32 bit games rip

No exaggeration, I think this is the perfect game (for me at least) I loved virtually everything this game had to offer :))

(+2)

I love this so much! but I wish you could use the mouse to control the camera or something because the camera angles feel a little restrictive, otherwise its a really cute and fun game ♡(≧◡≦)♡
